His & Hers, Yours & Mine

I've noticed little by little that the girls have started to choose things, sides, people and things that belong to one of the other of them. We have always encouraged sharing and rarely do we go out of our way to purchase 2 identical items for them just to attempt to avoid the inevitable meltdown. Most of the time the girls are really good about sharing. They will ask each other to trade if they want whatever sister has or they will repeat endlessly "when sister's all done" (which is the mantra we've ingrained in them to discourage all out war). This usually works and as soon as one is not begging, crying or chasing for an object, it no longer becomes the coveted object and they both move on to something new. Crisis averted, usually.

Some things they have decided belong to one or the other of them:
- Cups- they have a mutually agreed upon cup from each of the sets we have (straw cups- by color, princess cups- one the design is mostly faded off= Olivia's, the one where you can see all the design= Lucy)
- Table seats- Olivia sits on the long side of the table, Lucy sits at the head of the table
- Naps- Lucy sleeps in our room, Olivia sleeps in their room
- Couch blankets- Olivia = purple, Lucy = pink
- Sides of the car- Olivia = passenger side, Lucy = driver's side

Recently, we noticed that they have picked his and hers for Kevin and me too. At bedtime they go in and go potty one last time and then cuddle us while we say bedtime prayers. Olivia started requesting to cuddle Daddy and Lucy to cuddle Mama. It was cute and convenient that they each had a bedtime buddy at first. Then we noticed them start getting more attached and demanding who they cuddled each night. Last night we decided to switch it up and Kevin would cuddle Lucy and I would get Olivia. Ay yi yi!

Olivia was not ok with the idea from the beginning. Kevin carried her into their room and gave her a kiss and I did the same with Lucy. Then we switched and settled into our normal places for prayers- me in the rocking chair, Kevin pacing around the room. Olivia fussed for a bit until we started praying and then settled down. Half way through prayers though she noticed Kevin walking around with Lucy and started trying to climb down. I resettled her in my lap and continued. She then started with the sniffling and big crocodile tears. We made it through prayers and she gave me a tearful kiss only to freak out as soon as I tried to put her in her bed. She started bawling and yelling, Dada, Daddy, noooooo. Kevin came over and tucked her in after he laid Lucy down (who could care less who was holding her, by the way). Olivia worked herself into a full blown meltdown in no time complete with hyperventilating. Kevin stayed there and hugged her and said prayers all over again with her to try and redo the routine and settle her down. As soon as he laid her in her bed though it was back into meltdown. We left her in there with Lucy and their bedtime music. She yelled, cried, screamed and bawled for a good 20 mins before she finally settled down. It was crazy how worked up she got about cuddling me instead of Kevin.

Drama!
