Halloween Festivities

We had quite a bit of Halloween fun this year! Fortunately, the girls got lots of wear out of their princess costumes. First, we had a Halloween party at the library, then costume story time the next day, Trunk or Treat at Church and then Halloween trick or treating. In that time we also painted/carved a total of 6 pumpkins. I think we thoroughly covered all aspects of Halloween. Thank goodness this is a once a year thing.

The girls loved dressing up as Snow White (Olivia) and Cinderella (Lucy). I had a few different ideas for costumes but I am glad I went with princesses since they are definitely in the Disney stage and loved dressing up. The library story time was the first time they got to put on their costumes and see the other dressed up kids. It was quite crowded and the girls were a bit overwhelmed but they liked playing the games and getting prizes. Trunk or Treat was fun for the girls as a warm up to trick or treating. They loved seeing the other kids dressed up and kept pointing out all the other fairies and princesses they saw. They weren't too sure about walking up to people's cars and saying trick or treat though. They pretty much just whispered it and then whispered thank you. It was more fun for them to pass out the candy to the other kids coming around. They would enthusiastically put candy in each bucket and say "Happy Halloween" or occasionally "nice costume".

Last night they were pretty excited to go trick or treating since they were a bit used to the idea of it now. After dinner we put on their costumes and headed out around my parent's neighborhood. The girls weren't afraid at all to go up to the door together and say "trick or treat". They were also good about saying "thank you" after getting their treats too. They were good little trick or treaters and we had a nice stroll around the neighborhood. The girls definitely enjoyed the few dogs we saw also in costume. Once we got around the block and they could see my parents house again they were over trick or treating and wanted to go back inside. They really got into things when they realized they could help Grandpa pass out candy. This was more exciting for them than going door to door! They were hysterical to watch. Here's a typical scene from the night:

Olivia: "More kids are coming! Grandpa, more kids are coming!!"
Lucy: "Here they come!"
Olivia sternly to the trick or treaters: "Watch out for the door! Watch out for the door! Back up!"
Lucy: "Trick or treat. Thank you" as she passes out fistfuls of candy to each and every kid and studies their costumes. Lucy pretty much repeated whatever the kids said or whatever their parents were prodding them to say.
The girls would stand in the doorway grabbing handfuls of candy and making sure to get every bucket like it was their job. They would say "ok, ok. Get your bucket." over and over as they passed out the candy. They were so focused on the whole thing like it was a job. We were laughing so much watching them. The best was Olivia screaming at all these kids to back up and watch out for the door. They are seriously like 2 little old women most of the time.

They weren't very interested in their own candy. We gave them each one Swedish fish and they were good. The excitement of having something new to do was enough to give them a "sugar rush" that had them pretty hyped up. Luckily, they were worn out enough by the time we got home to go straight to bed. I think they're still a bit tired today too. I can't even imagine what next Halloween's going to be like!
