We squeezed in a quick road trip up the coast to Pismo Beach before school started. It was a relaxing and fun 4 days just the 5 of us. Thankfully, the kids were all really good in the car and we had fun singing, playing and sleeping on the drive there and home.
Out hotel had beach access and a pool/spa so the girls were in heaven. The first 2 days we bounced back and forth between the beach and pool to mix up the shell hunting, sand castle building and swimming. The weather was mostly clear and breezy but warm, which is perfect for up there and also kind of unusual for this time of year.
We went into town for dinner the first two nights and of course picked up some salt water taffy at the candy store. The girls favorite part was getting up in the morning and looking for sand dollars and se shells (we brought quite a few home). Olivia said one day the only thing missing from vacation was a park so after dinner Thursday night we stopped at a nearby park for sunset. Even the parks up there are right on the ocean front and offer amazing views! It was fun for the girls to play with another little girl and Kevin and I chatted with her dad who was a local and gave us some good tips about the area. We ended every evening with the girls watching a movie and Andrew snoozing away in his pack n play to the sounds of the waves crashing on the beach (they are so loud too!)
Friday we headed up to Hearst Castle for the tour. We all loved that. The girls were interested in all the fancy things and pools and Kevin and I were blown away by the breathtaking views. After walking around the gardens and heading back to the visitor center we decided to stop and see the elephant seals up the road a bit. They were so massive, really stinky and we got so close that it was definitely an experience. The girls thought they were really funny and Andrew's just happy to be out and about. We also drove through Morro Bay a bit and stopped for some much needed ice cream. After the kids were asleep that night, Kevin and I hung out on the balcony enjoying the sound of the waves and playing cards.
Saturday we spent a leisurely morning at the beach and in the pool one last time before packing up and heading home. It was a beautiful drive home. We went down the 1 for awhile through farmland and some small ranching towns. We detoured and drove through Solvang and then stopped for lunch in Ventura. I forgot how much there is to see and do up the coast. We can't wait to go back and explore some more.
