The girls spent the first 4 weeks of their summer going to summer school at Kevin's work every day. They were excited and nervous initially but ended up totally loving it and making some new friends.
Overall it was more like summer camp. They did some grade level appropriate learning activities first thing in the morning (math, reading & writing) and then split off into smaller groups mixed with all the grades for centers. There was bible study, Zumba, French, Art, Logic, and more. The girls were not in the same group so every week they were at different centers learning/doing different things. It was so much fun to hear them talk about what they did in each of their groups and to even hear Lucy trying to teach Olivia French one day! In the afternoons it was just fun/playtime so there were water days, movie days, petting zoo, a cooking day and other fun activities.
Obviously all of this was in English (except French) so we wondered how the girls would adapt after being in DLI this year. Kevin even asked the first grade teacher to test them in English so we know how they compare. Much to our amazement, they thrived! The teacher said they were excellent with their math and English skills and passed the middle-of-the-year first grade test. They had a little trouble with the vowel sounds, which we expected, but successfully read the English passage she gave them. Their math is also right on and they can start working on greater than and less than to prep for first grade math. They lagged a little in their reading comprehension but the teacher said they did get the overall gist of the story just lacking some of the finer details.
Lucy's biggest accomplishment of summer school = being 1 of only 4 kids that can successfully cross the monkey bars. She's so proud and wants to cross all the monkey bars at every park she sees!
