Soccer

I knew it would happen some day. I knew we would try out the soccer thing. Well, the time has come. The girls started soccer last week. We joined the team  kind of mid-season so they are just practicing with the team right now and not playing in the games. It probably is for the best since it seems the other kids have a bit more experience than the girls and actually understand what is going on and how to play.

The girls were so excited when Kevin got they cleats, shin guards and socks. They immediately ran around the backyard trying them out and kicking the ball around. They were nervous and excited about practice on Monday night. We got there a bit early so they could watch the team before them and they kept asking when it was their turn. Once it was time they ran over to the coach (Kevin's friend Pedro) and sat with the other kids. There is 1 other girl on the team. They followed along with the stretches and drills the team did but they definitely have a lot to learn. The coordination isn't quite there yet but they would diligently follow along and try to keep up with the other kids. They were so exhausted at each water break but they would run right back to continue on with practice.

When it came time to scrimmage toward the end the girls were both assigned to the yellow team. Not having any clue what they were supposed to do they stood together in the middle of the field turning to face and watch while all the other kids ran back and forth with the ball. When it would close to them or the herd would run toward them they would grab hands and huddle together. Finally the coach yelled, "Girls! You can't stand there and hold hands! Stop holding hands!" I was cracking up.

They survived and even said they had fun! They can't wait to go back next week. Afterwards the coach told us the other kids on the team looked just like them a year ago. He said they catch up really quickly which made me feel better. I'm glad they're trying something new. We'll see how it goes next week!
