We got back from Big Bear on Thursday and Kevin got back from his trip on Friday. We were all excited to have him back Friday night and the kids were busy most of the day making signs and getting a special cake to celebrate his return and belated Father's Day, which he missed. I was hoping for a relatively quiet day unpacking and doing laundry from our trip when late on Friday afternoon we had our first, and hopefully only, ortho emergency.
The kids were playing in the girls' room when Lucy ran out and said: "Olivia's braces are hanging out of her mouth!" It took a few mins of chaos to figure out exactly what had happened and why Olivia looked like this
After initially thinking the wire was poking back into her cheek, we all calmed down and realized she was very lucky it hadn't pierced her cheek and was merely resting up against it. But seriously, how does this happen?!? Well, it turns out the kids were playing some game where they put blankets over their heads and rip them off each other. Well, Olivia had her mouth open, the blanket got caught on the bracket and Andrew proceeded to rip it off her head and tear off a bracket and completely bend the wire. It was painful at first for Olivia since the cement had basically been ripped off her tooth, but other than not being able to close her mouth, she was just scared how and when it would get fixed.
Of course, this happened around 3:30pm on a Friday. The orthodontist's office is closed on Fridays. So I called the emergency number and left a message and then sent a follow-up text, with pictures, to the orthodontist and proceeded to wait. When it got to be 4:15 and I hadn't heard back yet I started to panic. I couldn't leave her stuck like this all weekend and started wondering if I should just cut the wire myself or??? In a panic, I called our pediatric dentist's office and explained the situation. They were about to close for the day but the dentist was so nice and agreed to stay and wait for us. We rushed right over and the entire dental office including the dentist could not believe their eyes. No one had ever seen anything like this and couldn't believe the wire had bent like that. This is ortho rebar - stainless steel that shouldn't bend like that! The dentist took great care of Olivia, calmed her down, cut the wire and made sure it wasn't rubbing her and then found a loose tooth and pulled it so he could bill the whole appointment to the insurance instead of charging me for an emergency appointment. So thoughtful! Plus Olivia was super excited that at the end of all this the Tooth Fairy was coming. I was so relieved that we would not have to spend the entire weekend feeding her smoothies and baby food so she could eat.
The orthodontist finally got back to me around 5:30pm and apologized for being away from his phone. He too was astounded that this had even happened and couldn't believe the wire was bent like that. Only us. So all was well by the time we finally made it to pick up Kevin late that evening. He loved our signs and we love having him back home with us!
