I don't know exactly how I missed the past 18ish months here but I did. I found one post I had started with photos and never got around to writing and publishing. So I'll publish that but it's from April 2019.
A lot has happened and changed since then and I know it would be tedious to go back and try and recap each thing so I'll probably have to do some broad updates and leave it at that. I'm hoping once I get caught up it will be easier to maintain. Time will tell.
School 2019/2020
It was an interesting school year to say the least. The girls navigated 5th grade with 2 wonderful teachers and some big goals. They were both on student council, part of the lunchtime Chess Club, won multiple awards for Super Student, Student of the Month, AR and Dreambox (math). They both ended the year with over 500 AR points which surpassed the combined total of each of their individual classes!
Andrew settled right in to DLI Kinder and loved going to school with the girls. They all loved seeing each other around campus and always made sure to point each other out to their friends. It was so sweet to hear them recount instances when they ran into each other on campus. Andrew had the same Kinder teacher the girls had and he was doing really well with his Spanish. He was often paired up with the native Spanish speakers who are working on their English and the teacher called him her tech support. He said goodbye to every student on the way out every day and was flying through the work. We were so pleased with how the year was going for everyone.
We were a week away from Spring Break when Covid-19 shut down our County and their school, which basically ended their year. After a 3-week break, they finished the school year with distance learning from home. The kids were so bummed when they realized they wouldn't have their end of year awards, none of the fun end of school year events, no yearbook signings, DLI ceremonies etc. It was definitely a hard end to the year and left a lot of questions for this next year.
Swim/Soccer/Ballet/Baseball
Last spring/summer the girls tried a season of swim team at the high school near our house. We thought it would be fun for them to try something other than ballet and this didn't conflict so we signed up. The girls jumped right into it with their usual wonderful attitude and willingness to try something new. We spent an hour a night 4x per week at practice, sometimes coming straight from ballet. They never complained. They learned new strokes, improved their times and got an amazing tan. We had a few swim meets throughout the season and while the girls weren't the best, they did improve and had fun. It was definitely a learning experience for all of us and we're glad we tried it but ballet is still their preferred sport.
The girls progressed to level 4 in ballet and also began jazz and worked hard in pre-pointe class. 4 classes a week keeps them very busy but they love it. Once Covid hit, the studio also had to shut down and they shifted classes online where the girls were able to continue dancing. They are looking forward to getting their pointe shoes soon hopefully.
Andrew tried a season of soccer through Parks & Rec. last year and it was basically just a group activity to get him used to that situation. It was parent-coached and they were honestly a pretty terrible team but we still had fun. He started to get it down a little bit by the end of the season but decided he wanted to try to baseball instead.
We signed Andrew up for spring T-ball this year and got him all the gear and he was so excited. He practiced a lot in the front yard and picked it up really quickly at practices. We managed to get 1 game in before Covid shut down Little League. In that 1 game, Andrew played first base and had some good hits and was awarded the game ball. He was so proud and excited and loved having a ton of family there to see his first game. We were so sad when that ended up being the one and only game of the season. Hopefully by this next spring he can again play baseball.
