Beach Day

I switched my days off and took a few hours vacation so I could extend the holiday weekend to 5 days. Since Kevin has Thursdays off too it's always worth it to have an extra family day. We decided at the last minute to head out to the beach to get away from the heat. It worked out perfectly!
.
The girls napped on the way out there and since it was still early enough from the holiday weekend we had perfect (free) parking. It was overcast and a bit chilly when we first arrived but the sun poked through here and there and it warmed up enough to be pleasant. There were a few families scattered here and there but it was not crowded at all. The girls were much more open to the idea of the beach this time (you'll remember our visit a few months ago). They sat in their chairs and ate lunch while watching some kids play in the water. Once the seagulls moved in to check us out the girls were ecstatic! The birds were the highlight of their beach trip by far. We did get them to walk in the sand without crying and even play in it! They had to be sitting on the blanket or their chairs though. They weren't up for sitting completely in the sand just yet. Olivia definitely made progress since she didn't freak out when a grain of sand stuck to her. Since they were slathered in sunscreen there was plenty of sand stuck to them by the end of the trip too. They dug in the sand, threw it around and filled their play toys. It was a nice, relaxing trip even though it was only a few hours. We packed up and headed home before traffic and in time for naps (for everyone).
We're always amazed at how well the girls adapt. I'm always hesitant to take them into new situations since the meltdown potential is times two. We've yet to ever have a complete and epic failure (knock on wood, fingers crossed, rub Buddha's belly etc.) They always easily adapt and are such well behaved and fun little girls. We're not quite up for an entire get-away vacation yet (where we're not staying with family or friends) but we're getting more confident with each outing.
